Introducing September’s hero product: theNexus 7 tablet
GOOGLE NEXUS 7 TABLET
FROM ¤200, GOOGLE.COM/NEXUS
There are few better ways to while away a journey
than tinkering with a touchscreen tablet, making the
Nexus 7 a genuine joy for travellers. Its seven-inch
HD screen is perfect for enjoying a film, yet it’s
compact enough to slip in a pocket. It went on
sale across Europe at the end of the summer, but
you’ll do well to find one, as savvy gadget fans
are snapping them up.
The reasons are obvious. Despite the Nexus’s
modest price – an iPad 3 with comparable
specs costs more than ¤500 – this is a quality
gadget. The casing is plastic, but it feels
eminently robust, with a mottled texture
that makes it less likely to slip out of hands
in hot climates. It runs extremely slickly,
akin to the experience of an iPad, and has
a few extra tricks, such as using GPS and
Google information to automatically
tell you about the world nearby or
deploy the superb navigation app. This
is a gadget from the top table, even
though it’s a cheap-as-chips option.
Even so, it’s not all gravy: the Nexus
7 contains just 8GB of memory, or
16GB for another ¤50, but has no
memory-card expansion slot; the
device is for Wi-Fi use only, as
opposed to 3G; and there are
limited tablet apps for Android.
Nevertheless, it’s certainly a cool
tool to take on your travels.
