TRAVELLER
THEOVERVIEW
Dominated by the medieval castle at its ancient heart, Edinburgh wears
its UNESCOWorld Heritage site status on its tartan sleeve with pride.
But don’t be fooled: although it’s stuffed with immaculately preserved
Georgian architecture, this fortress city is surprisingly forward-looking,
with contemporary art, design hotels and award-winning food.
Great Scot
This year’s Edinburgh Festival might be over, but there’s
always plenty to see and do in the Scottish capital
AMBER NECTAR
It would be verging on
the blasphemous to visit
and not drink a dram
(or two). The Scotch
Whisky Experience
(
scotchwhiskyexperience.
co.uk
) offers a fun and
informative historical tour
as well as tastings. Virtually
every traditional watering
hole in town serves the
drink, but for a more
cosmopolitan tipple, try
the bar at the new Hotel
Missoni (
hotelmissoni.com
).
Then, before you leave,
hot foot it to the award-
winning Royal Mile Whiskies
(
royalmilewhiskies.com
) to
pick up a souvenir.
ARTWALK
Take a riverside stroll
along the beautiful
Water of Leith walkway
to the Scottish
Gallery of Modern Art
(
nationalgalleries.org
).
Its grounds are dotted
with sculptures by the
likes of Henry Moore
and Edinburgh’s own
Sir Eduardo Paolozzi,
providing sights that
are almost as as lovely
as the views along the
footpath.
