RHODES
There are pretty hotels and ancient hotels to be found
in every city in the world, but you know you’ve hit the
medieval jackpot when you can’t actually drive all the
way to your accommodation.
Points have to go to the management at this boutique
bolthole for mastering the art of the ‘big reveal’. First,
you make your way to a stone arch on the edge of
Rhodes’ Old Town, from which you’re guided on foot
through a labyrinth of cobbled lanes to the highest
point – and there you’ll find a jewel of a hotel. Built
by the Crusaders, renovated by the Ottomans and
restored by Greek architect Anastasiadis Efthimios,
this 600-year-old charmer is all stained-glass windows,
exotic objects and glorious carpets.
Its six rooms combine classic Ottoman features with
luxe modern details; top pick is the Pasha Suite, for a
private hammam where you can unwind while gazing
up at the domed ceiling. Add a bijou garden with plunge
pool, warm service and amazing breakfasts, and you
have a sublime oasis for soaking up a little history.

Slaughters Country Inn
BRISTOL
The Cotswolds: England’s chocolate-box country, full of
thatched cottages, willow-covered streams and American
tourists. So what better way to experience its wonders than
in a real olde-worlde inn? Created from three 15th-century
farmworkers’ cottages, this establishment feels reassuringly
historic, from its ivy-clad exterior and flagstoned hallways
to the roaring fires in the wood-panelled bar. Desirable
mod-cons such as Wi-Fi and indoor plumbing do little
to spoil the effect and much to improve comfort levels,
while enormous beds and full English breakfasts made
with locally sourced ingredients come as standard.
