A Loghja
€15
(58 Rue de la Montagne,
tel: 01 44 07 05 74) This deli and wine bar
in the fifth (near the Pantheon) is a small temple
devoted to all flavours Corsican. Think dry-cured
cold cuts such as
prizuttu, coppa
and
lonzu
, myriad
goat’s cheeses, fig and chestnut jams, and a variety
of wines and beers from the island.
Afghani
€30
(18 Rue Paul-Albert, tel: 01 42 51 08 72) Climb the
heights of Montmartre for a taste of, you guessed
it, Afghanistan. Much loved by locals, this is the
place to discover the little-known, simple but hearty
Afghani cuisine. Try the veal with spinach sauce,
accompanied with an Indian-style naan.
Beef Club
€50
(58 Rue Jean-Jacques-Rousseau, tel: 09 54 37
13 65) Vegetarian? Look away now, for the Beef Club
is exactly what it says on the packet: a temple to the
cud-chewing bovine, reverently raised in Yorkshire
and beautifully plated in this white-tiled, New York-
style steakhouse in the 1st. The surf’n’turf (half a
lobster and steak, €43) covers all bases.
Experimental Cocktail Club
(37 Rue
St-Sauveur, 2nd, tel: 01 4508 8809) This bar
is so hip, you’ll be hard pressed to find it: the barely
Paris
marked door is easy to miss. Once inside, though, it’s
all about that speakeasy feel – black Chesterfields,
dim lighting and a zinc bar. The cocktail list lives up
to the club’s name and, at about €12 a drink, isn’t
extortionate.
Le Bataclan
(50 Boulevard Voltaire, tel:
01 4314 0030) A Parisian institution dating back to
1864, Le Bataclan is an elegantly shabby theatre in
the 11th where live music is performed nightly. The
atmosphere is intimate and dynamic.
Christian Louboutin
Okay, so maybe
spending €500+ on a pair of iconic, red-
soled shoes isn’t sensible, but you’re in Paris, right?
And life’s for living, no? At the very least, you could
pop your head in to take a look. Doesn’t mean you
have to actually buy anything... (19 rue Jean-
Jacques Rousseau, 1st).
If you like French Impressionism, you
should trek out to
Chatou
, one of the outer
suburbs west of Paris, and have lunch at the Maison
Fournaise, where the Impressionists used to meet
and where Renoir painted a number of works, notably
the Déjeuner des canotiers in 1881 (take the RER A
line west to Chatou-Croissy).
