Keston Lodge
£15
(131 Upper Street,
N1, tel: 020 7354 9535) The staff at this
casual Islington bar, with its retro décor and plenty of
table space, whip up delicious cocktails, such as chilli
passionfruit martinis and strawberries-and-cream
daquiris. They’ve got good food too: order from the
succulent burger menu (starting at £6) or select a
meat, fish or veggie platter to share.
Rasa Sayang
£30
(5 Macclesfield Street,W1, tel: 020 7734 1382)
Malaysian restaurants are few and far between in
the capital, but what we lack in quantity is more than
made up for in quality at Rasa Sayang. In the heart of
Chinatown, powerful dishes include Singapore chilli
crab and
kuek dadar
(pancakes filled with grated
coconut and palm sugar) for dessert. The pearl milk
‘bubble tea’ is delicious and the
teh tarik
makes a
sweet finale to your meal.
Lima
£70
(31 Rathbone
Place,W1, tel: 020 3002 2640) Peruvian restaurants
have been popping up across the capital lately and
are tipped to be London’s next big foodie trend. We
say Lima has the pick of the pisco sours (the national
cocktail which you
have
to try), and the finest cerviche
London
in town. Run by Virgilio Martinez, former executive
chef of Astrid y Gastón – one of the San Pellegrino
World’s Best Restaurants – his philosophy is to create
‘gastronomic luxury’with natural and unique flavours
and produce. And does he ever. To start with, the bay
scallops tiraditos have a real kick, and the sea bass
cerviche with tiger’s milk is soft, subtle and silky on
the tongue. The mains are more robust – try the
tender lamb shoulder with black quinoa, pisco and
cinnamon, or the meaty octopus with olive oil on a
bed of white quinoa. Savour the dulce de leche ice
creamwith beetroot emulsion to finish as you take in
Lima’s beautifully Latin-designed dining room.
The Book Club
(100–106 Leonard Street,
EC2A 4RH tel: 020 7684 8618) Ever since
it opened just over two years ago, The Book Club in
Shoreditch has been the go-to haunt of the trendy
East End set. And it’s not hard to see why. With
regular themed parties, weekly ping pong nights
(each Tuesday), workshops and events, there’s an
‘anything goes’ dress code, eclectic music mix and
a creative drinks menu.
