Veranda Café
€30
(9 Rue du Vieux Collège,
tel: 022 310 9680) Tucked behind the
bustling main shopping street, this simple restaurant
is perfect for a quick lunch on the trot. If you don’t
fancy the plat du jour, try one of the tasty salads
loaded with the likes of goat’s cheese, roasted
vegetables or chicken.
Olio Design
€50
(59 Rue
du Rhone, tel: 022 310 1555) If you can take your
eyes off the food-related scenes from classic movies
flashing across the flatscreen TV, Olio’s offerings
are showstopping in their own right. From exquisite
truffle-scented pasta dishes to the chef’s speciality
of raw fish, this is a taste of Italian excellence.
Alhambar
(10 Rue de la Rôtisserie, tel:
022 312 1313) By day, this is a relaxed café
and restaurant, but when night falls it takes on a
completely new identity. Cocktail-drinking clubgoers
sink into the well-worn sofas as the DJ takes over
the decks for a night of lively dance tracks.
Little
Buddha
(10 Place Neuve, tel: 022 307 1000) Part of
the Buddha Bar chain of incredibly cool international
nightspots, Little Buddha is one of the swankiest
Geneva
places in town for late-night socialising and shameless
posing. Sit back on theAsian-inspired banquettes and
enjoy the sensuous sounds and exotic cocktails.
The NewYork-style boutique bakery called
Cupcakes in the City
(12 Rue Henri-
Blanvalet) is well known among sweet-toothed
genevois. The cakes are almost too pretty to eat but,
really, who could resist such fiendish flavours as black
and white toblerone or lime and ricotta?
Carouge
Away from the high-end jewellery
shops and lakeside attractions, Carouge
is perhaps Geneva’s prettiest neighbourhood.
Characterised by low-rise architecture, independent
shops and terracotta-floored bars, it feels more like
a Provençal village than a city suburb.
Lausanne
Only 40 minutes away by road or rail, Lausanne has
a less formal feel than Geneva and a surprisingly
different aspect on the Alps. Perhaps best known
for its Olympic associations, Lausanne is home to
numerous sports governing bodies and world-
renowned educational establishments.
