Ohlàlà Tartes-shop
€15
(18 Mainzer
Strasse) On a street where squatters
once battled police sits a pretty little shop run by
a young French lady who bakes beautiful fresh
quiches and sweet tarts every morning. The all-
you-can-eat vegan/vegetarian Sunday brunch
is perfect after a stroll through the Boxhagener
Platz market.
Ars Vini
€30
(27 Sredzkistrasse,
tel: 030 5471 4182) A restaurant entirely dedicated
to exploring variations on the Alpine art of fondue.
Here, everything from Thai fish to German
bratwurst gets boiled on the table. Traditionalists,
despair not: they make a great cheese fondue,
too.
Kimchi Princess
€50
(36 Skalitzer Strasse,
tel: 030 4881 2460) While perhaps not the very
best Korean in Berlin, this is definitely the most
buzzing. In this simple, designer space, throngs of
hip, urban types congregate on benches to gobble
up some satisfying, hot and spicy “bibimbap”, or
Korean barbecue. Reservations recommended.
Heroes
(49 Friedelstrasse, tel: 030 3744
7511) Named after a song by that idol
of the Berlin hipster, David Bowie, this French-
Berlin
American-owned café-bar is a lovely place for
an evening drink and a light meal. Tuesday is
movie-night, and Heroes regularly hosts concerts
and art exhibitions.
White Trash Fast Food
(6–7
Schönhauser Allee, tel: 030 5034 8668) This
rock’n’roll burger palace features live music most
nights of the week, from country to electro-trash,
and is always packed to the rafters.
Those seeking to binge on streetwear
brands should head over to
Neue
Schönhauser Strasse
and
Münzstrasse
in
Mitte, streets bursting with flagship stores
and concept shops – from the high-end 14
oz boutique to the more humdrum American
Apparel and Adidas Original outlets just around
the corner.
The 17th-century
Charlottenburg
Palace
in the west of the city is the only
surviving residence of the Hohenzollern family
which once ruled Prussia. Especially pleasant is
the stroll through the palace gardens on a late
summer’s evening.
