Eastern Europe
Head to the High
Tatras Mountains that
border Poland and
Slovakia to see the
European brown bear.
Steep slopes covered
in grasses and berries
attract them in spring
and autumn, and
observers can snap
safely from the valley
bottoms. Wolves, lynx
and chamois can also
be found here.
In Poland’s primeval
Białowieża Forest,
the European wisent
(
bison), still survives
in small numbers. Add
the nine species of
woodpecker found
here, and it’s high on
the wildlife watcher’s
itinerary.
France
Less than two hours’
flight time from Britain,
the Camargue delta
of the mighty Rhône
has become one of the
most famous wetlands
in Europe. Stands of
dazzling pink flamingo
light up brackish
lagoons, yet there is
one iconic image that
every photographer
visiting this paradise
dreams of capturing on
film: the Camargue’s
famous white horses
galloping through
frothing water, manes
and tails flowing in the
warm breeze.
