Do Petra (properly)
Amman
This year has seen the 200th anniversary of Petra’s rediscovery. The ancient city remains near the top of most traveller’s must-
do lists for good reason – emerging from inside a crevice to see a 2,000-year-old temple carved entirely out of red sandstone rear
up into view is one of those things that leaves an indelible imprint. But you need to it properly. Head down early in the morning
or late afternoon to miss the crowds and make sure to walk – rather than ride – down to the Treasury. Allow two days; take
water, and do stop at a Bedouin cave for coffee. Finally, be sure to finish with a drink in the Al Maq’aad Bar at the Mövenpick
Hotel. Its gold-leaf walls and Eastern furniture make you feel like a film star after a day playing Indiana Jones.

Dance all weekend
Berlin
Constantly name-checked by DJs as “the best club in the world”, Berghain has been the beating, thumping heart of techno
music since 2004. Make it past the notoriously picky door staff and it’s you against the music for a 48-hour session in this huge,
dark, industrial space. Edgy DJs play the newest beats that won’t even make it out of Berlin for months. For pure euphoria,
head upstairs to Panorama Bar at sunrise to experience the “lifting of the blinds” and watch as the sun hits the dance floor.
