Peaks of gastronomy
This winter, world-class skiing meets world-class
cuisine in Italy's stunning South Tyrol region
South Tyrol,
Italy's most northerly
province, is a land of contrasts. Set
against the stunning backdrop that is the
Dolomites, a UNESCOWorld Heritage
Site and one of the world’s most beautiful
mountain ranges, the region boasts both
Alpine and Mediterranean influences. Quite
simply, South Tyrol is 'Italy with a twist'.
The province has become a mecca for
discerning skiers, attracted by the prospect
of guaranteed snow on 90%of its slopes,
300
days of sunshine per year and Dolomiti
Superski – the world's largest ski network.
With 1,200km of slopes, a wide variety of
superb downhill and cross-country pistes,
over 60 ski schools and the magnificent
Sellaronda – a 26km tour around the peaks
of the Dolomites – all accessible with
just one ski pass, this winter playground
represents not just a dream destination for
all ski enthusiasts, but also terrific value.
Plus, nowhere else will you find such a
unique and innovative twist to the après-
ski experience. One of the most exciting
events on the calendar is the Taste for
Skiing in Alta Badia, which sees three of the
resort's Michelin-starred chefs, including
Norbert Niederkofler of the highly
acclaimed St Hubertus restaurant, join
together with some of the most promising
culinary prospects from the neighbouring
valleys to create sumptuous dishes for
selected mountain ski huts. Ski from one
refuge to another as you sample these
gastronomic works of art alongside South
Tyrol's finest wines, meet the chefs and
even pick up a few skiing and cooking
tips along the way.
This event also provides visitors with the
opportunity to taste some of the region's
fantastic local produce, including delicious
apples, cheese, milk and honey, while
no winter trip is complete without trying
dumplings made with speck (a smoked
meat) and Schlutzkrapfen (ravioli filled with
spinach and cheese).
This winter, whether you are looking
for incredible food, spectacular skiing or a
delightful harmony between contrasting
cultures and landscapes, you're sure to find
it in South Tyrol – Italy with a twist.
