Seagrass
£15
(74
Chapel Market, N1) One of the
capital’s first ‘squatter’ restaurants, by day Seagrass is
Manzes, a London institution of pie ‘n’ mash shops; all
wooden benches and white tiles. But Wednesday to
Saturday evenings it becomes a restaurant with a three-
course, set menu for £30, specialising in meat and seafood
and served under candlelight and the atmospheric clatter
of staff serving exceptional food.
2:
Factory House
£30
(10
Lime Street, EC3, tel: 020 7929 4590) Harking
back to the golden age of modern industrialists, this cosy
underground bar-come-restaurant clearly manufactures
good feeling among its hearty City crowd, serving up a
pleasant mix of old British favourites alongside an extensive
wine list and Fluid cocktails.
3:
Trishna
(15-17
Blandford
Street, W1, tel: 020 7935 5624) Good value and Michelin-
starred aren’t words that usually go together on London’s
restaurant scene but this newly-awarded, low-key Indian
in Marylebone is anything but ordinary. A new five-course
Game Menu (£28.50), including Tandoori Partridge and
London
Guinea Fowl Biryani show off young chef Karam Sethi’s
innovation, without breaking the bank.
4:
Bubbledogs
(70
Charlotte Street, W1) Take delicious
grower Champagnes sold by the bottle or glass and add
gourmet hotdogs with flavours ranging from the insane
to total genius and you’ve got the perfect venue for the fun-
loving wine-buff. Full-English hot dog and bio-dynamic rose
fizz got our tails wagging.
5:
Folklore
Islington is a little pocket of shopping heaven
–
well, that’s what north Londoners like to think. Folklore’s
opening is just another excuse for them to say they’re right:
this charming shop sells simple, minimalist homewares with a
Scandinavian feel (193 Upper Street, N1).
