Cocktail hour
Starting around 6pm and
stretching till 9pm, aperitivo
hour is a Milanese tradition
where locals get together
for cocktails and nibbles. The
Bulgari Hotel is a favoured spot
for high-end networking. Hit
Camparino for classic cocktails:
it’s where the aperitivo trend
kicked off back in 1915.
Dinner
The Milanese like eat late and
there are plenty of places to
splurge if you’re celebrating
a deal. La Terza Carbonaia is
a Milan institution well worth
the expense account, while the
Michelin-starred Ristorante
Joia, is Milan’s first vegetarian
restaurant, and one of its most
experimental.
Fun times
A trip to Milan isn’t complete without visiting La Scala, the city’s legendary
opera house. Then on to the Bamboo bar of the Armani Hotel, where over-
looking stunning views of the city you can finish the trip, Negroni in hand.
Raffaella
Mangiarotti
This award-winning
architect and industrial
designer has designed
products for Fratelli
Rossetti, JVC, Mandarina
Duck and Skitsch. Her
Dandelion floor lamp is part
of the permanent collection
at New York's MoMA,
making her the ideal guide
to the city’s design culture.
RAFFAELLA'S PLAN
8
AM
Start the morning at
Verger (
verger.it
)
in the heart
of the Brera neighbourhood.
It's part concept store,
selling kitchenware,
gourmet nibbles and clothes,
part super-cool bar.
10
AM
For Milanese design,
have a wander around the
Centro area. Design store
Skitsch (

)
displays
unique textiles, homeware

Milanese people
adore the simplicity and
preciseness of Japanese food.
Both Yoshi (

and Sumire

are big
hits with my friends.

The curators of Triennale
Design Museum (
triennale.

)
organise exhibitions
that are trendy and of
great cultural interest.
Over the past three years,
it has become the most
authoritative cultural centre
in Milan and a must-see for
visiting aesthetes.
5.30
PM
After a wander
through the Triennale, I
love to stop at the museum’s
DesignCafè. It has beautiful
windows overlooking Parco
Sempione, the royal gardens
of Milan's former castle,
Castello Sforzesco.

Chef Pietro Leemann's
Michelin-starred Ristorante
Joia (
joia.it
),
Milan’s first
vegetarian restaurant,
is superb. The cuisine is
all natural, yet wildly
experimental. After dinner,
I love to head home to spend
time with my 12-year-old
son, Ludovico. He updates
me on all the latest design
technology – he’s one of my
greatest resources.
