Port Adriano, one of the island’s many yacht marinas,
a new multimillion-euro facelift is taking place that
will be finished just in time for the summer season.
Masterminded by French designer Philippe Starck, the
project includes a new commercial and leisure area,
and an expanded marina that has scope to hold vessels
in excess of 100m – what’s known in the trade as a
gigayacht (yes, they do go that big).
In some ways, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.
Majorca has long been a key stopping-off point on the
sailing circuit and the island has a whopping 44 ports
scattered along its coast. But it’s only when you see
them for yourself that you realise just what this means.
Take a walk around Puerto Portals, for instance,
one of the island’s most illustrious ports, and there’s
an abundance of riches on show, as Sunseekers and
Princesses bob up and down in the marina.
It’s all rather idyllic and a world away from the kind
of overbuilt coastal resort that you might expect to find
in Majorca. For the view alone, it’s a wonderful place;
but even if your wallet doesn’t stretch to keeping a boat
here, you can still make like the have-yachts at Wellies
(
wellies.es
). This famed quayside bar is where the sailing
set can be found each evening as the sun goes down –
and you can join them for the price of a gin and tonic.
