TOMBS OF THE KINGS
Dating from the Hellenistic
and Roman periods of around
325BC to 330AD, the Tombs
of the Kings site was a triumph
of architectural design in its
heyday. The 100 or so tombs
and chambers have been hewn
from solid rock by hand and
are typical of the period’s style.
Most are well-preserved, with
fashionable features like Doric
columns, script-like carvings
and courtyards. Look carefully
and you’ll see wall frescos that,
although a tad faded now, once
depicted scenes of everyday life in
brilliant shades of blue and red.
The necropolis was dubbed
the Tombs of the Kings in
recognition of its rich design.
In fact, Paphos nobles and high
ranking officials were buried
here, rather than kings. The site
can be found just off the seafront
heading from Paphos harbour
towards Coral Bay and is a great
place to explore, especially in the
morning when the temperature
is cooler. The open-top

stops here several times a day.
