CAFÉ CULTURE
FULL OF
BEANS
FAZIL BEY
ISTANBUL
Turks introduced
coffee to Europe
and have been
brewing for
centuries. Try a cup at this traditional
Kadıköy market coffee house
for an authentic Istanbul experience

ELEPHANT
HOUSE
EDINBURGH
When it comes
to elegant
venues to grab
a brew, Scotland’s capital rivals the
best. Enjoy a cup in the place where
JK Rowling wrote
Harry Potter
(

Marshall Street; elephanthouse.biz

Ever-hip
Kreuzberg is
rammed with
delectable coffee
places. Our favourite is this classy
spot, which takes inspiration from a
Rimbaud poem (
18 Oranienstraße;

).
Three other places
rocking their own version
of European café culture
diners closer to their food: there’s an
open kitchen and every effort is made
to keep patrons informed about where
the produce comes from. For this they
were rewarded with the Jægersborggade
area’s first Michelin star in March.
What else sets Nørrebro apart? Aside
from the bright young chefs, it’s also
the place to sample Denmark’s ethnic
fusion treats – freshly baked pastries and
heart-stopping grilled Middle Eastern
meats. But more than this, there’s a real
Danish twist. Dining out is like stopping
by a friend’s battered apartment: an
understated, relaxed experience, like that
typified by cool café bar/up-and-coming
music venue Tjili Pop (
tjili.dk
).
In Nørrebro, there’s no pomp to the
eateries – chefs make a point of getting
away from that – and so it was with
the arrival of Oysters & Grill (
cofoco.
dk/oysters.php
), the district’s hot new
seafood joint. No wild fanfare opening,
just a steady trickle of young Danes
putting down pushbikes and going in
to investigate. Continuing the Nørrebro
trend, this restaurant doesn’t necessarily
serve better food; it’s just in a less
pretentious, more convivial environment.
Hygge
is the Danish way of socialising
andmeans, essentially, “relaxing and
enjoying quality time together”.
So what of the future? The recently
launchedVisit Copenhagen app is
already directing tourists to this once-
unknown neighbourhood in ever greater
numbers, but locals aren’t concerned.
Nørrebro has no intention of changing
just yet.Wake up and smell the ethically
sourced coffee.
