AMSTERDAM
In a city well known for its major
museums, such as the Rijksmuseum
and the Van Gogh Museum, the
latest addition to grace Amsterdam’s
cultural scene is somewhat more
alternative. The AmsterdamTattoo
Museum, brainchild of tattoo legend
Henk “Hanky Panky”Schiffmacher,
is believed to be the largest in the
world and home to around 40,000
exhibits relating to all things ink.
The ‘Tatican’, as it’s known, includes
tattoos from all cultures, historic
periods and walks of life; tattoo
machines and even human flesh
(tattooed, of course). And for those
who want a permanent souvenir,
there’s even an on-site tattoo studio.

ISLE OF MAN
On 26 May, the world-famous Tourist
Trophy (TT) motorbike racers roar onto
the island. Escape the mayhemwith
lesser known, beach-based delights –
these are just four of the highlights along
almost 160kmof coastline.
RAMSEY HARBOUR
Come and swoon
at all the pricey yachts. The Manx Sailing
and Cruising Club is headquartered here,
and its Round the Island race on 6 May
provides plenty of spectacle.
COASTAL RIDES
Offering some of the
best coastal views in Europe, the Manx
Electric Railway tram from Laxey to
Douglas is a glorious 45-minute coast
ride. Let the sea air blow off the cobwebs.
NIARBYL COVE
Looking for rugged,
rocky beauty? Get down to the remotest
part of the island, where Niarbyl Cove
has quaint fishermen’s cottages and
cliff-path walks.
BASKING SHARKS
These sea monsters
are an endangered species and, at up to
10m in length, the second largest fish in
the world. Frommid-May tomid-August,
when the sea is calm, Port Erin and Peel
Breakwater are both ideal viewing spots
to see them.

PARIS
The chance to run a restaurant in
Paris sounds like every foodie’s
dream– or a particularly tortuous
round of
Masterchef
– but now
this fantasy has become reality.
Un Jour, un Chef allows wannabe
Alain Ducasses to be head chef
at a Marais restaurant for one
night only. Concept creator
Ludovic Dalavaud is on hand to
offer assistance, but other than
that, the non-paying volunteers
choose ingredients, menu design
and cooking process. It’s great for
the city’s neophiles: every night
provides diners with a totally
different experience.
A three-course dinner costs €30
a head. 1jour1chef.com
