GO
If the sunny
weathermakes you
hanker for a swim, but
the cold sea puts you
off, try visiting Lake
Vouliagmeni,where the
water is a comfortable
24°C all year round.
NOWAY!
While digging the
metro station
at Monastiraki,
contractors found
the lost Eridanos
River, which had been
converted into a sewer
during the time of
Emperor Hadrian.
The river has now
been incorporated
into the design of
the new station.

AFTER DARK
LOW KEY
Cala
del Vermut
(6 Carrer
de lesMagdalenes)
Aquick glass of
vermouth before lunch
was once a tradition
and luckily you can
still find one or two
old-school
vermuterias
if you need a fix of
wormwoodwine –
such as this charming
nook of a bar in Gotico.
Order a side tapa of
anchovies if youwant
to appear local.
LIVE MUSIC
Razzmatazz
(88
Carrer Pamplona, tel:
93 320 8200) The five
rooms of this former
factory in Poblenou
host an array of indie
and dance gigs by
semi-famous artists,
before turning into the
city’s biggest nightclub
around 1am.
LATE & LIVELY
Factory Club
(5-7
Carrer Escudellers)
Techno rules the
roost at this new club
right in the centre of
partyville. Spatially,
it’s nothing special,
but so far they seem
to have succeeded in
attracting the right
sort of people to enjoy
the underground vibe.
THIS MONTH
SHOP
One of
Europe’s premier food
markets, La Boqueria
is half grocery store,
half tourist attraction.
Sneak past the
camera-wielding
hordes for better deals
onmeat, cheese and
seafood at the back.
Look out for stalls
selling fresh fruit
juice, sangria
and hot chocolate
(91 La Rambla).
GO
With the grand
SantaMaria del Mar
Gothic church, the
tree-lined Passeig del
Born square, weird
museums (such as the
ChocolateMuseum
and theMammoth
Museum), and plenty
of hip bars, restaurants
and boutiques in
hidden alleys, El Born
is one barrio worth
botheringwith.
ESCAPE
The sleepy
village of Sant Pol de
Mar makes for a nice
contrast to bustling
Barcelona and
gourmands will have
already noted that the
three-star Sant Pau
Restaurant makes its
home here. During the
day, take a walk on the
Cami de Ronda coastal
footpath to find hidden
coves and beaches.
NOWAY!
Despite being adored
today, Gaudi was
loathed bymany of
his contemporaries,
including Picasso and
George Orwell, who
both took exception
to his work. Even Dali
had a swing, saying
the architect had
“superbly creative
bad taste”.
