INSIDE VALLETTA
Valletta has two different faces.
By day, it’s a fast-paced business
and commercial capital, while
by night there are eerie alleyways
to explore and a myriad of chic
eateries and trendy wine bars to
duck into. Try Trabuxu (
1 Strait
Street; trabuxu.com.mt
) for a
great wine list and scrumptious
nibbles, or Legligin (
119 St Lucy’s
Street; tel: +356 21 224 699
) for a
Maltese take on tapas.
The whole city was planned
by the Knights of St John as a
refuge for injured soldiers and
was one of the first European
cities to be built on a grid. It was
completed in 1570.
Sightseeing wise, St John’s
Co-Cathedral (
St Lucia’s Street;
stjohnscocathedral.com
) is a
must, with its world-famous
Caravaggio painting of St
John’s gruesome beheading.
Just outside, Republic Street
is the main thoroughfare, a
pedestrian zone dedicated to
shopping, eating and good old
Mediterranean mingling.
Right,
on the stairs of the
Upper Barrakka Gardens;
opposite,
on the junction
of St Christopher’s Street
and St Ursula Street
