WITH ITS MEGALITHIC TEMPLES, A BUZZING CAPITAL AND STUNNING COASTLINE,
MALTA MAKES AN IDEAL – AND UNEXPECTEDLY CULTURAL – SPRING GETAWAY
THERE ARE SOME
common misconceptions about Malta. Having carved its niche as a
sand-and-sea destination in the 1970s, many think of it as a winter getaway for retirees
or a no-frills option for summer sun. In fact, its rich history stretches a lot further back.
Since 7000BC, the tiny rock has entertained many occupants, including the
Romans, Turks and the Knights of St John. Nowhere is this more evident than in the
capital, Valletta, with its grand gardens, imposing palaces and buzzing café scene. It’s
currently in the running to become the 2018 European Capital of Culture, a fact that
has spurred a flurry of activity, with the long-overdue rebuilding of the Royal Opera
House and the construction of a new Parliament.
Melding a captivating city break, enchanting historical destination and stunning
seaside holiday, it makes for a spring trip of substance. Who would have thought it?

coastline. A few kilometres
fromValletta, it is far
removed from the
Baroque style of the
capital city and is one of
the best places for a

with nothing but the odd
boulder in your way
