JUNE
BREST
Shiver Me Timbers is the theme
of this July’s maritime festival –
highly apt, because the tall-maste
ships that will pile into Brest harbo
for 13-19 July look like they’ve
sailed straight out of
Pirates of the
Caribbean
. Ahuge deal in Brittany,
the week-long event will see more
than 2,000 vessels from25
countries engage in parades,
displays and flotillas. On dry land,
crêpe stalls, livemusic and Cossac
dancing complete the picture, whil
a massive firework display on Bast
Day is another highlight.

LONDON STANSTED
Discos in barns, theatrical props
and the only swimming pool at a
British festival all mean Standon
Calling is no workaday shindig.
Held in the grounds of a stately
home on 3-5August, what started
out as a birthday party for 25
people has morphed into one of
the most singular sessions of the
summer. Friendly Fires, Mumford
and Sons, and Florence and the
Machine are previous headliners,
but this party is as much about
fun and fancy dress as the acts.
Plus, it’s run on a not-for-profit
basis, with all the proceeds
going to charity. Need any more
reasons to love this boutique
bash?

DRESDEN
June is peak wedding season
all over Europe, but there’s no
ceremony quite like this one.
Commemorating the medieval
nuptials of Protestantism
founder, Martin Luther, and his
bride, Katharina von Bora, in
1525, this annual knees-up is
accompanied by muchmead, ale
andmerrymaking. On 8-10 June,
more than 100,000 people will
descend on the medieval town of
Wittenberg, near Dresden, where
the highlight of the three-day
festival is a mock marriage on the
Saturday between two locals.
