for a long time. Paris was, for a time, the
epicentre of thismusic and it has never
really disappeared. In recent years, artists
like Sanseverino andThomas Dutronc
have embraced it.
“Our influences in electronicmusic
are very different, given the incredible
vitality of this style in recent years. The
advantage of electronicmusic is that it
has no boundaries and its creativity has
no limits. It can be very commercial, like
Lady Gaga, or elitist, like Gui Borrato.”
Do you think electro-swing is becoming
more popular?
“Since 2008, Europe has been getting to
know this style and its representatives
havemultiplied. DJ Parov Stelar tours
globally, and lindy-hop dance nights
flourish in Paris, London and Berlin.
There’s a real audience for thismusic.”
You’re known for being a great festival band.
Do you have a favourite?
“La Fête de l’Huma in Paris, where we
played to 65,000 people, or theMontreal
Jazz Festival, where we played on the
same stage that Herbie Hancock had
played on two days earlier. Our most
memorable is probably the Paléo Festival
in Nyon, Switzerland. The organisers
had enough faith in us to have us play
two consecutive days, but after the first
performance, we celebrated so hard we’d
lost our voices by the next day!”
Where can we see you on tour?
“We start our tour inmid-March. France
is still our main playground, but we played
a lot of overseas gigs for the first album
and it’s logical that we do that again. For
the time being, we’ll be playing in France,
Switzerland and Germany, and probably
in England and Canada.”
Where are your favourite places to go out
in Paris?
“Pigalle and the Grands Boulevards
are amust. There’s a great variety of
theatres, bars and clubs. You’ll find us
hanging out at Le Trianon, La Cigale and
of course LeMoulin Rouge, Le Silencio
and Le Social Club.We often have a drink
at Chez Moune or Le Carmen in the
9th arrondisement – bars that are nice,
simple and friendly!”
Caravan Palace start their tour on 13
March inAngoulême, near Bordeaux. The
