LYON
THE ELECTRO MAESTRO
VINCENT CARRY
Vincent Carry is aman in a hurry – unsurprisingwhen you
consider he’s behindmany of the city’s best music events.
During a career that has involvedmanaging clubs, bands,
a record shop, raves and journalism, he and a bunch of DJ
mates set up the crowning jewel of Lyon’s nightlife: theNuits
Sonores festival, which thisMay attracted 80,000 visitors.
Carry sees the festival as verymuch an urban event,
inextricably linked to the city. “We use 50 locations,
includingmany heritage sites and industrial buildings,” he
says. “While the roots of the programme are electronic, it is
open to all independent music.”
The festival is just themost visible face of a thriving
local scene that has seen the emergence of DJs like Agoria,
Douster, AcidWashed and Reworks, and the designers and
digital-installation artists of agency Trafik. “There’s a real
creative energy in Lyon,” he says. “We organise concerts
all year around the world and we never travel without some
Lyonnais artistes. There is a real collective spirit.”
