WORDS ALEX MURPHY
MARK BAILEY
After the fifth interview,
one might get bored
of speaking to some
people. Luckily for Mark,
Usain Bolt, who he’s now
profiled five times (read
the latest on p22), is
always “fun, relaxed and
very cheeky”, playing
practical jokes on him
and even getting him
drunk. The fastest man in
history describes himself
as “lazy” and loves
takeaways. In fact, our
writer even reckons he
could beat Bolt in a race
– as long he could distract
himwith a KFC. When
he’s not with Bolt, Mark
can be found chatting to
other sporting legends for
Men’s Fitness, The Times,
The Telegraph, ShortList,
Men’s Health, FHM
and
more… No wonder Bolt
can’t keep up!
ANDREW
HANKINSON
Before he began writing
about social travel sites,
Andrew Hankinson had
scant idea what they
were about, despite
having his finger on the
pulse for
GQ, Esquire,
The Guardian
and
The
Huffington Post,
among
others. After some
research, however, he
quickly “realised there
were a lot of interesting
people involved”. He
now believes that these
sites are an efficient way
of plugging into a city
and experiencing it in a
way you don’t usually
as a visitor. “[The sites
are] about people trying
to reconnect with each
other... if that doesn’t
sound too pukey,” he
says. Judge for yourself,
on p107.
CLARE KENDALL &
HAZEL SOUTHAM
When Clare Kendall
and Hazel Southam set
out to meet Morocco’s
Berber nomads (see
p60), the two former
Daily Telegraph
staffers
had no idea they were
embarking on the
toughest assignment
of their careers. Clare
spent the trip struggling
to keep ahead of the
Berber tribe in order
to get the best photos,
while Hazel hung at
the back interviewing.
She says that, by the
end, everything had
overtaken her: “Even the
dung beetles were rating
their chances.” They call
this trip “one of the most
satisfying of recent years.”
FERNANDO VOLKEN
TOGNI
He only began illustrating
in 2009, but the Brazilian
now sees it as a parallel
career to his graphic
design work. When
he gets a commission,
he says he puts some
music on and it will
“start to grow, stack,
fit and surround” the
idea, creating a beautiful
illustration, just like the
one he has done for
our business feature
on p107. He’s also
illustrated for
Wired
magazine, Google’s
Think Quarterly
, Brazilian
magazines
Galileu
and
Superinteressante,
and
has created a collection
of bamboo iPhone and
iPad cases.
