TRAVELLER
DISCOVERIES
InAmsterdam, playingwith food is all the rage.
Try some of the city’s latest culinary concepts,
as zany as they are tasty
NOT A BEAN
There are plenty of BYO (bring your own)
venues, but this usually applies to booze, not
food. Basis claims to be the world’s first bring-
your-own-food diner, offering drinks, tables,
a lively vibe and a telephone, while you order
takeaway or bring grub in. Bizarre, but fun.

MIXING IT UP
With a name that literally means ‘experiment’, it’s no surprise
that Proef, the brainchild of an entrepreneur and a food stylist,
presents its set menus with playful disregard for convention.
The secluded restaurant in the city’sWestergasfabriek culture
park serves Champagne with jolly purple petals in it, broth in
jam jars and pretty much everything with charm in abundance.

DRACULA, BEWARE!
Garlic Queen’s name is a nod to its location on Amsterdam’s
main gay hangout, as well as to the menu, which vampires should
definitely steer clear of. The charming staff at this cosy place are
evangelical about the health benefits of the little white bulb, which
makes its way into most of the dishes – including the ice cream.

WHAT ARE LITTLE GIRLS MADE OF?
No need to curb your sweet tooth at Sucre, a temple to all
things nice on the corner of the city’s stately Vondelpark.
Diners can choose from a menu infused with all manner
of surprisingly sugary flourishes. Reindeer meat with
chocolate sauce, anyone?

STICKING IT TO THEM
There are plenty of surprises on the menu of Everything
on a Stick (EOAS), an all-you-can-eat joint on the stately
Prinsengracht canal, but its name isn’t one of them.
From the mozzarella and baby tomato with fresh basil
starter, to the fat, ripe strawberries served with molten
chocolate and popping candy, absolutely everything
is skewered.
