The best feeling a surfer can
have is to get a good barrel
– it’s hard to explain the feeling to
those who’ve never experienced
it – so for a surf photographer like
myself, there is no greater reward
than to freeze that moment when
the wave envelops the surfer. This
was taken early one morning in
Hondarribia, a beautiful Spanish
fishing village, half an hour from
Biarritz. The sandbars here create
waves that break onto the shore in
large barrels – very dangerous for
swimmers, but great for surfers.
Indar Unanue, a professional
Spanish surfer, and I reached the
beach shortly before dawn. The
light was particularly beautiful, so
we rushed to be in the water for
that magic moment when the first
rays appeared. Then came this
wave and Indar deftly caught it.
“There are plenty of factors that
can ruin a surf photo, but in this
case everything flowed, and as he
passed ahead of me in the wave, I
knew I was in the right place at the
decisive moment. This picture is
one of those that compensate for
the early start.
