What’s going on?

Find snow at least one metre deep and stamp
it down to compact it. Use a saw and shovel to
cut rectangular blocks, 15-30cm thick.

Build a sleeping shelf inside out of snow – cold
air will sink below it. Smooth off any rough edges
on walls to prevent melting-snow drips.

Lay blocks in a concentric spiral until they
meet above head height. Pack gaps with snow.
Cut an entrance – dig down to make it bigger.

Snuggle down for the night (a wee nip of
