TRAVELLER
the Lange Wandbahn lift just before it closes. It will
get you to the 2,872m summit of Greitspitze, Ischgl’s
highest point, then take run Number 13 home. Going
down via Idalp, you have a fabulous 11km run and
by taking the last lift up, you’ll avoid any crowds and
enjoy the sun setting across the mountains with just
your mates in tow.
Or you could head for a drink at the Pardorama
restaurant high above town. As the daylight receeds,
you’ll find the crowds arriving to watch the sun drop
below the mountainous horizon in spectacular fashion.
In many ways, it’s the Alpine equivalent of an Ibiza
sunset. The view itself is high on drama and colour,
and those few moments when time almost seems to
stand still as the fiery ball disappears are the perfect
counterpoint to the night of hedonism that will follow.
There is one distinct difference from its Balearic
equivalent. To get home afterwards, you won’t be
wandering along a beach. Instead, you’ll have to
navigate a black run. But don’t worry, it’s not a tricky
descent – just pleasantly sweeping, with fabulous
views. And, because it will be virtually deserted, you’ll
feel like the only person on top of the mountain.

Three other nighttime resorts
CHAMONIX, FRANCE
(accessed via Geneva)
The self-styled home of extreme sports
skis hard and plays harder – after a day
on some of the most demanding slopes in
the world, head into town for a great mix of
restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
VAL THORENS, FRANCE
(accessed via Lyon/Grenoble)
The highest resort in Europe, Val Thorens
has a great snow record along with world-

ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND
(accessed via Geneva or Zurich)
The setting beneath the iconic Matterhorn is
reason enough to visit Zermatt, but combine
this with reliable snow, some of the world’s
best mountain restaurants and partying
until almost dawn, and it’s hard to beat.
