MANCHESTER
TomCruise, eat
your heart out. The Top Gun Flight
Simulator Centre inAshton-under-
Lyne, Greater Manchester, allows
regular Joes (and Joannas) to try
their luck at being fighter pilots.
Using a real Delfin L29 fighter jet
that once flew for the RomanianAir
Force, the new centre gives “pilots”
the chance to live out Maverick
fantasies, with authentic flying
suits, oxygenmasks and flight
noises.

LONDON
Pop-up bars were the only
places to be seen in 2011, but the
latest hipster hotspots aren’t just
temporary, but transient too. The team
behind Secret Cinema, which roams
across the capital screening films
in unusual locations, is now offering
pre-show, Michelin-starredmeals in a
Secret Restaurant (

). Meanwhile, bar creator Bourne
& Hollingsworth has created a moving
version of its Noho establishment, which
is packed up and rebuilt in a new secret
location every week. Sign up to receive
cryptic clues, like the one below, to its

ZURICH
On 7 February, it will be 200
years since the birth of Britain’s greatest
novelist, Charles Dickens. And it isn’t
just in his home country that he’s
being commemorated. First editions
of Dickens’s works, readings by the
author’s great-great-grandson Gerald
Dickens, photographs and drawings are
all on show in
The Mysteries of Charles
Dickens (1812-1870)
at the Museum
Strauhof in Zurich. Thomas Schlachter,
the exhibition’s curator, believes the
author is unrivalled in terms of his impact
on literature. “There’s no figure in the
German-speaking world, or elsewhere,
whose role can be compared. One of
the titans of world literature and an
entertainer of the first water, his social
concerns are as relevant today as they
were in his own times.”The show runs
until 4 March, with information in English
and German.
