is enjoying Budapest’s dog-friendly culture. “They’ve
received their first grooming since arriving and it’s one
of the best cuts they’ve ever had,” he says. “You can take
them just about everywhere – people are so friendly.”
A wealth of public parks make this city exceptionally
habitable for dogs. St Stephen’s Park (Szent István) has
its own section of grass exclusively for dogs; there are
walking trails in City Park (Városliget), and on Margaret
Island (Margit-sziget), dogs can roam free. Even if you’re
not an owner, these are terrific ways to escape the bustle.
Of course, with all these animals, the city has
recognised the need for, well, other additional services.
Visitors may notice, around town, small enclosed gravel
areas with plastic bag dispensers. Known as dog runs,
they are, as you may have guessed, specifically designed
for dealing with doggie waste. How very civilised.
