When she was trading
at the turn of the 20th
century, Mrs Crick
of Denton Antiques
was famous for
throwing people out
of her shop. Today, her
great-granddaughter
Elizabeth Denton
doesn’t have quite the
same reputation, but
the family business
maintains a fine
selection of chandeliers
and glassware.

Every customer at John
&
Jessie is greeted
personally by Sophie,
the resident Jack
Russell. Once vetted for
treats, they’re free to
choose from a cracking
range of carefully
selected flowers or
order arrangements for
special occasions.

Few people can claim
to have had a portrait of
themselves by Lucian
Freud hang in the National
Gallery, but Sally Clarke
is one of them. It’s all
thanks to the quality of
her coffee and pain aux
raisins. The artist became
a regular customer at
her neighbourhood
deli, Clarke’s, due to his
penchant for pastry, they
became friends and the
rest is history.
