Ali Schwarz
He’s one half of Berlin’s hardcore electro-house duo
Tiefschwarz, but on weekends he can be found
buying his groceries from hip deli Mogg & Melzer
“
oskar (melzer) was
one of the first people to
introduce me into the Berlin scene back in 2000.
At the time, the two best parties were his F.U.N.
nights and Cookies. He used to find the most
incredible locations and it drew a particularly
wild crowd. I met Paul Mogg, who was producing
music as The Psychonauts, through him.
“
Over time, they both kind of drifted out of the
club scene, doing more art-related events and then
opening the fabulous
MOGG & MELZER DELI

.
They make everything from
scratch, from the crunchy pickles and slaw on the
side, to the big hunks of tender salt beef.
“
The whole Mädchenschule project
[

,
which houses
the deli, is in a beautiful former
Jewish girls’ school, disused
since the 1930s but recently
restored. It also has the
high-end Pauly Saal
restaurant, a Jewish food
event space and three
great galleries, including
the Eigen + Art Lab, and
the third floor has the most
incredible ballroom space.
“
The deli’s in the centre of the
Mitte gallery neighbourhood, which
is a bit like Chelsea in New York. There are still
some old Mitte institutions left from when it was
a little more anti-establishment, like Clärchens
Ballhaus [
ballhaus.de
],
where you can swing dance
in style and have dinner on their lovely terrace. This
overlooks the newer Mitte, like the Kunst Werke
Institute [
kw-berlin.de
],
which runs the Berlin
Biennale and has the most perfect courtyard café
to start exploring the area from.”
