he idea of the tree of life has run through religion
andmythology since the earliest times. Halfway
between heaven and earth, the tree has always been
revered for its size and longevity. Craving a place
to dreamand find refuge, or simply to look down on daily
existence like a bird in flight, it’s no surprise that we’ve long
retired to these ancient forest guardians.
Indeed, tree houses are one of the oldest forms
of dwelling inmany cultures and there are still some
tribes, such as the Kombai and Korowai people, from
the foothills of the JayawijayaMountains in Irian Jaya,
Indonesia, who continue to live 40mup to stay safe from
pests and enemies. In Europe too, these shelters have
appeared in the annals of history and art from the times of
