ALICANTE
THE RAP SUPERSTAR
NACH
It might seem like a strange way for a city to show it’s
appreciation, but when rapper Nach saw that his
barrio
(neighbourhood) had created a
ninot
(papier-mâché
puppet) in his image to be burned during Alicante’s annual
bonfires festival, Las Hogueras de San Juan, he knew that
he’d been accepted.
“I used to love Hogueras when I was a kid,” he says, “but
I never expected to havemy own ninot. It’s such a change,
because 20 years ago, nobody cared about rap in Alicante.”
Part of this change is thanks toNach’s five albums,
whose sharp, intelligent lyrics have changed the perception
of Spanish hip hop. At the beginning of this year, he was
nominated for a Goya, the Spanish equivalent of anOscar,
in the category of Best Original Song, for the soundtrack of
the film
Verbo
, and he plays to audiences of up to 10,000 in
Central and South America, where he’s a bona fide star.
Now at last, it seems they’re catching on in his home
town, too.
