Swimming Croatia’s
Dalmatian coast, from
island to secluded island,
sounded like a great idea
at the time, but it was
more difficult than it first
appeared. “What looks
like a 20-minute swim can
end up taking an hour or
more,” says the 24-year-
old, explaining his surprise
that a tiny speckle of
dots on the map actually
covered huge distances.
Nevertheless, the travel
writer, whose work
has featured in
The
Independent, Rough
Guides
and on the BBC’s
website, enjoyed himself:
“I learned never to
underestimate the size
and power of the ocean,”
he says, and the region’s
natural beauty was well
worth the effort. Read all
about it on p60.
ROSIE BIRKETT
Our monthly food
columnist clearly enjoyed
her trip to Denmark this
month. “The thriving food
culture there is a unique
experience,” she says,
“from the trailblazing
culinary developments
of the Nordic Food
Lab in Copenhagen to
the pioneering organic
farming of Knuthenlund
in the south.” As a regular
writer for
The Guardian,
The Times
and
Stylist
,
Rosie’s had some weird
dinners in her time, but
research for this month’s
column (p43) set a new
bar. “The ants tasted
like sour-lemon sherbet
and went nicely with
crème fraîche, and the
fermented grasshoppers
made a delicious,
umami-laden condiment.”
Sounds, erm, great, Rosie.
TIMEWHITE
On his latest photo shoot
in Alicante (p66), Tim’s
highlight was a personal
tour of “showman” Paco
Torreblanca’s chocolate
factory. “The comparisons
toWillyWonka are well-
documented,” he says. Tim
also caught the tail end of
the annual
Las Hogueras
de San Juan
(Bonfires of
Saint John) festival – the
most important event
in Alicante’s cultural
calendar, where “the
town comes alight with
a stunning display of
fireworks.” Fun and games
aside, Tim specialises in
portraiture and high-end
travel photography for
such eminent publications
as
The Sunday Times
and
Tatler.

Ask our deputy editor’s
friends and family what
her favourite things are
and the word “food”
would doubtless come
up a fair few times. Who
else, then, were we going
to send on our

challenge in the Savoie
region of western France
(p84)? Despite getting
to arrange her laughing
gear around a whopping
28 courses of gourmet
grub, Sarah says the
highlight of the trip was a
4am trip out onto a lake
with a local fisherman.
“Watching the sun come
up while catching the
fish we would eat for
lunch is a memory I will
have forever,” she says.
