Bó del B
€15
(14 Carrer Fusteria) It may
look like a run-of-the-mill shawarma joint,
but fans of this diminutive sandwich joint swear they
wrap the best sandwiches in the city. Marinated
meats, diverse toppings and freshly baked bread
make the queues worth it.
Picnic
€30
(1 Carrer de
Commerc, tel: 93 511 6661) A chic café/restaurant
with high stools and counter-style tabletops, Picnic
has a small but well-assembled menu of innovative
dishes like grilled kangaroo with falafel or octopus
with chickpea salad. It’s very friendly on your wallet
and also serves brunch.
Jamboree
(17 Plaça Reial, tel: 93 301 7564)
This dark and dusty cellar offers a nightly
programme of jazz, Latin and blues concerts (usually
from 10pm), making it a good bet any day of the
week. Tickets tend to be €10-15, although Mondays’
WTF jam sessions are good fun and great value at €4.
Restaurant Papiermühle
€15
(35 St.Alban-
Tal, tel: 061 272 4848) The restaurant at the
Basel Paper Mill and Paper Museum is set on a quiet
street in one of the city’s nicest quarters. Homemade
cakes round out a simple and reasonably-priced
menu.
Zum Schmale Wurf
€50
(10 Rheingasse,
tel: 061 683 3325) Squeezed between much larger
and less unique restaurants, Zum SchmaleWurf’s
Rhine-side seating can feel almost as Mediterranean
as its menu. The downside? It’s almost impossible to
book a table on a nice evening.
Im Fluss
(Rheinweg) ImFluss (whichmeans
“in the current”) returns to themiddle of
the Rhine for the 13th year, offering free nightly
concerts featuring bands fromBasel and abroad.
Ahighlight on the city’smusical calendar.
Wine
The Beyer family in Eguisheim
have been making wine since 1580. The
Barcelona
Basel
At about 1am, it morphs into a hip-hop dance spot
(separate tickets required).
CD Drome
Relive those whimsical, faraway
moments of your youth spent browsing for
records in HMVwith a visit to CD Drome in Barcelona’s
Raval district. Financially it’s hardly prudent in the
downloading era, but the excellent and eclectic
selection, plus knowledgeable staff, should help you
discover your new favourite band... (3Valldoncella,
tel: 93 317 4646, cddrome.com).
Marbella
Barceloneta beach will be hellish
this time of year, but you don’t have to leave
the city to find a good stretch of sand. There are five
more beaches north of Port Olimpic, with a diminishing
amount of tourists – and irritating hawkers – the
further you go.The pickmight beMarbella, popular
with nudists, gays and“modernos”(the Barcelona
equivalent of hipsters).
Duncan Rhodes
doors are open at their tasting shop (8 Place
Château St Léon, Eguisheim) every day except
Thursday, 10am-12 and 2-6pm. Entry is free, but
few tasters leave empty handed. One of the best
of the several thousand vineyards along the
AlsaceWine Route.
Rhine Swim
Each year at 6pmon 14August,
several thousand Baselers pour into the
Rhine all at once for the annual “Rhine Swim”. Getting
swept beneath the city’s bridges can be a thrilling
experience.
