In the city’s ancient heart, Kaleiçi, Ottoman houses – their rough stone walls softened with pink and purple bougainvillea – line
narrow thoroughfares leading down to a picturesque harbour. Discover Hadriyanüs Kapısı (Hadrian’s Gate) and the ruined Kesik
Minaret (what’s left of a Byzantine church later converted into a mosque) before curbing pester power with a trip to the
harbourside Oyuncak Müzesi (Toy Museum). In the city of Side, ruins include an amphitheatre, aqueduct and
agora
(ancient
place of assembly), augmented by the fabulous remains of Apollo’s Temple, overlooking the sea. Follow the small lanes and
streets down to the water here, for fresh fish and other welcome refreshment.
