If you think camel riding and donkey trekking are offbeat, wait until you
try cow riding. As mad as it sounds, an organic farm in Switzerland’s
Schaffhausen canton has started saddling up Tyrolese grey
Milchkühe
(dairy cows) and offering scenic country rides.
Bolderhof in Hemishofen has a line up of bovine beauties with
names like La Paloma, Oklahoma and Umbra. After choosing one
and getting to grips with some guttural Swiss German commands,
riders can hit the trail for a trot around the farmor a go on a half-day
excursion through fields and forest to the banks of the Rhine. Keeping
your cow on track and away from the meadows of lush grass requires
skill and patience, but the pace is just right for exploring this bucolic
corner of Switzerland in beautiful slowmotion.
