Sziget
BUDAPEST
Sitting bang in the middle of the
city, this island festival is a veritable goulash
of pop culture. Not only is there a solid indie
line-up – acts this year include Placebo, Friendly
Fires and The Stone Roses – but myriad theatre,
cabaret and film events make it the pick for any-
one with a short attention span. Another plus
is their online wish list. Suggest your favourite
bands and you may find they crop up here next
year. How very democratic.
Until 30April, full week-pass, €195; sziget.hu
Hideout
ZAGREB
Croatia’s festivals rock for three
reasons: they’re beautiful, plentiful and cheap.
Top of the pops is this hedonist’s haven which,
according to Simian Mobile Disco, involves “a
load of spoilt DJs, an up-for-it crowd and an
excellent location,”on the island of Pag. The
all-star line-up attracts the party-hard set, with
2012 headliners including DJs Chase & Status,
Tiga, Claude von Stroke and SBTRKT, plus the
ever-popular boat parties.

Melt!
BERLIN
When it comes to unorthodox venues,
Melt! reigns supreme. Held at Ferropolis, an
industrial iron mine next to a lake, 95 minutes’
drive south of Berlin, this weekend of madness
is “similar to the inside of Marilyn Manson’s
head”, according to Noel Gallagher. Be prepared
to party hard alongside the oh-so-cool Berlin
crowd, while listening to some of the big indie
and dance names. This year, Bloc Party, Plan B
and Two Door Cinema Club are stand-outs.
Tickets, €110; meltfestival.de
