travels through Austria, Italy, France and along the coast of
Spain through continental Europe. After leaving Europe and
crossing the Mediterranean by ferry on day two, Morocco’s
spectacular (sometimes teeth rattling) mountain roads and
rocky paths across the Atlas and the Sarhro will take the driving
teams to the Bani mountains.
Mauritania will offer up pure Africa Sahara with golden sand
dunes, soft desert paths and fast salt flats, passing through the
Banc D’Arguin National Park – a Unesco World Heritage Site.
This is followed by a dash through the red clay roads of Mali
under beautiful, ancient baobab trees. The leg in Guinea leads
competitors along West Africa’s largest river, the Niger and
allows them to experience the ancient cultures and untouched
villages along the way, all in the hope of changing colonial
stereotypes. The wetlands, jungles and rich wildlife will await
teams in Guinea-Bissau, the former Portuguese colony, which is
also the final stop for the rally.
Year after year, the Budapest to Bamako plays out as arguably
one of the world’s most epic adventures against the backdrop of
being the largest amateur rally in the world. There were over 500
entrants from around the world this year. Organisers are hoping
for even more in the future. Clearly ‘car people’ and their
adventurous spirit are alive and well in the world.

l’Autriche, l’Italie et la France. Le deuxième jour, après l’Europe et
la traversée de la Méditerranée en bateau, place aux impressionnantes
routes de montagne du Maroc (parfois très cahotantes) et aux pistes
rocailleuses de l’Atlas et du Sarhro, qui mènent aux montagnes de Bani.
Ensuite, la Mauritanie. Pur paysage de l’Afrique saharienne, avec
ses dunes de sable doré, ses pistes dans le désert et ses marais
salants, il réserve aussi des merveilles comme la réserve naturelle du
Parc national du Banc D’Arguin – site classé au patrimoine mondial
de l’Unesco. Le périple se poursuit par une course éclair à travers
les routes argileuses du Mali, à l’ombre de vénérables baobabs.
Les concurrents s’acheminent alors vers la Guinée, longeant le plus
grand fleuve d’Afrique de l’Ouest, le Niger. Là, ils sont également
invités à aller à la rencontre de cultures très anciennes et de villages
inexplorés, loin des stéréotypes coloniaux. Enfin, les terres humides,
la jungle et la riche faune et flore de Guinée-Bissau charmeront les
équipages. Cette ancienne colonie portugaise est également la
dernière étape du rallye.
Année après année,
Budapest to Bamako
se profile
immanquablement comme l’une des odyssées les plus fantastiques
du monde, tout en affirmant sa dimension de rallye international
amateur. Plus de 500 participants issus de tous les horizons y ont pris
part en 2012 et les organisateurs en attendent un nombre plus
conséquent prochainement. C’est sûr, pour l’aventure, les « fous du
volant » répondront encore et toujours présent !

Car people’ (coureurs) zijn ‘s werelds beste. Het zijn zij die u rondom
u wil tijdens een avontuur van 9,900 km doorheen Europa en West-
Afrika. Zij die te gewetensvol zijn, hebben hier niets te zoeken, maar
sommigen vinden hier wel degelijk het avontuur; een snelle tocht
doorheen de Sahara die hen de kans biedt een verschil te maken.
We hebben het over de Budapest-Bamako Great African Run 2013,
’
s werelds grootste amateurrally, waarvan al de opbrengsten naar
het goede doel gaan.
Andrew Szabo organiseert deze Budapest-Bamako rally, een
spirituele erfgenaam van de klassieke Dakar-race. Na een poging tot
deelname aan Dakar in 2005 die hij diende op te geven door een
gebrek aan sponsors, besloot deze internetondernemer een
zachtaardiger, milder, liberaler en goedkoper alternatief in te richten.
In 2009 en 2010 leverde de Budapest-Bamako rally zo’n € 700.000
op aan hulp aan Afrika. De rallyorganisatie bewees dat liefdadigheid
start in het hart en naast het bouwen van een drinkwaterput in
Mauritanië leverde het een incubator, sterilisatiemateriaal en andere
medische voorraden aan een gratis ziekenhuis in Bamako. In de dorpjes
bouwden de rallydeelnemers zonnepanelen en na afloop van het
avontuur doneerden verschillende teams hun wagen, die voortaan
dienst zou doen als ambulance.
Volgens de organisatoren zal de tocht in 2013 ongezien spectaculair
en lang zijn. Het startschot wordt gegeven op 25 januari in Boedapest
en is een groots gebeuren en trekt duizenden kijklustigen naar de
Hongaarse hoofdstad. Van daaruit gaat het door Europa naar Spanje, om
vervolgens een ferryboot te nemen naar Marokko, van waaruit het
zuidwaarts gaat naar de draslanden, jungles en het rijke wildleven van
Guinee-Bissau en Mali.
Budapest-Bamako finisht als een van ‘s werelds meest epische
avonturen. Dit jaar waren er meer dan 500 deelnemers. De ‘car people’
en hun zin voor avontuur zijn wereldwijd wel degelijk
alive en kicking
