AW
:
On
ArrestedDevelopment
, your
character,GeorgeBluthSr., is reprehensible.
He’sahorrible fatherandacrooked
businessman, butwecan’thelpbut lovehim.
JT:
He’swily. Even in jail, he’s the consummate
businessman. Hedoes havehisways, but he
alsohas heart—almost toomuch. I likehim. I
mean, thewhole family is suspect.Whose isn’t?
AW
:
Youoncesaid that todocomedy, you
have to trustyourcolleagueswithyour life.
JT:
It’s that old therapist thing: “Fall back into
myarms.”Comedy is like that. Youhave to
choosevery carefullywhoyou fall with. I’ve
beenvery, very lucky.
AW
:
You’vebeenapartof somany funny
showsover theyears, including
TheLarry
SandersShow
.Whathaveyou learnedabout
comedyover theyears?
JT:
Funny is funny, and I have to relearn it
everyday. I think thegreat comedians that I’ve
learned from, towhom I’m indebted— they
neverwink. Theynever say, ‘This is funny.’ They
play for keeps. Nowinkingallowed.
