Lyzette Boyce, an American Airlines reserva-
tions operations specialist in Port-of-Spain, in
theRepublic of Trinidad in theCaribbean, is on
amission. Hermission is to teach all the chil-
dren inher churchandcommunity valuable lifeskills thatwill help themsucceed.
Boyce,whorecentlyearnedacollegedegree inBehavioralScience from theUniversityof the
SouthernCaribbean, hasbeen teachingchildren formore than10years.Herparentsareminis-
ters, and they taught theirdaughterbyexample. “They taughtme thatwearehere tohelpothers
andfindways toempowerpeople toachievegood things for their lives,” shesays.
Boyce, a church youthminister, creates lessons to teach the importance of completing
school work, aswell as lessons about looking to the future andmaking career goals. “I teach
the students about job preparedness and how to interview for a job,” saysBoyce. “I also teach
lessonsabout respect, hygieneandself-esteem.”
Boycesaysmanyof thekidsshementorscome from low-income, single-parent homesandneed
positiverolemodels.SaysBoyce, “I see thesesituationsasopportunities to teachandgive, tohelp the
kidsgrowandsee that theyhaveabright future to look forward to.”
Known as “Aunty Lyzzie” in her community, Boyce often opens her home to tutor students who
needextrahelpwith theirschoolwork.Herchurchpastor,PatriciaLai-Fook, saysBoycehas“untiring
dedication to reachingandmentoringothers.”
“That’swhatmy life is—sharing, caring, giving, teaching,” saysBoyce. “I learn from thekidsand
get strength from themaswell. I believe this iswhy I amplacedon thisearth.”
