actress of her generation.” Still, Wright
maintaineda steady careerhighlightedby
numerous artistic roles, all thewhilehold-
ing together a family in theSanFrancisco
suburbs.
When I askWright how shewas able to
balanceall of it, she tiltsherhead thought-
fullyandsays, “Idon’tknowhow toanswer
that. It’s a toughquestion, because I look
back and go: Well, it happened. Maybe I
didn’t work thatmuch? I get burned out
when I seepeopledoing toomanymovies
and toomanymagazine covers, somaybe
it’sabenefit.”Shepausesforamoment,then
continuesinatonethat’smorecenteredand
reassured.“Yes, it isabenefittonotworkso
much. I’mnot disheartenedby theway it
went. Ithappened theway itwas supposed
tohappen.Igottobewiththekids,andnow
it’sgoodandbusy.And fun.”
“DoyoumisstheBayArea?”Iask.
“Not. At. All.”She shakesherhead from
side to side. “Been there, done that. You
know?”
As the hour progresses, there’s one
thoughtthatcontinuouslystrikesme:Robin
Wright is just really… real. She speakspur-
posefully, at times emphasizing specific
words or pounding on one handwith the

out, and insteadofprocessing the trauma, I
packedup thehouse andwemoved to the
SanFranciscoarea.”From1996until2009,
thecoupleraisedtheirkidsnearly400miles
northof L.A., in theunincorporated town
ofRoss,Calif.,population2,415, justacross
theGoldenGateBridge fromSanFrancisco
inMarinCounty. “Marin isbeautiful, and
justsosane,”shesays,andthenlaughs.“You
know, comparedtohere.”
