Then there was Jane’s Addic-
tion, but that reunionhappened
too. Creedence Clearwater Re-
vival still comes up, but John
Fogerty hates his bandmates
way toomuch to even entertain
thenotionof a reunion.
For the past few years, I’ve
brought up the Jayhawks. If
you’ve never heard of them, you
will on page 61, because har-
monists Mark Olson and Gary
Lourisarebringingbacksomeof
that good stuff. Just as theBobs
in
Office Space
say that for their
money, it doesn’t get any better
thanwhenMichaelBolton sings
“When aManLoves aWoman,”
forme, it doesn’t get any better
than when the Jayhawks sing
“Tampa toTulsa.”
More on point for this issue
of
American Way
, though, are
you folks going from Tulsa to
Tampa — or from anywhere to
Tampa. OnFebruary 1, the eyes
of the sportingworldwill be on
Tampa Bay, Florida, for Super
Bowl XLIII. And we marked
the occasion by featuring Flori-
da’s largest estuaryonour cover.
This is the first timewe’ve done
a celebrity-less destination cov-
er in almost twodecades. But it
won’t be the last.
Moving forward,
American
Way
, which is still the only in-
flightmagazinepublished every
two weeks, will begin featuring
destinations. We’re not doing
away with celebrities altogeth-
er, though. After all, I’m still
quite curiousaboutwhatmakes
PaulaAbdul tick (youand Iwill
both find out in our February
1 issue). But we staffers here
agree that it’s time to get back
to our roots. We do a heck of
a job bringing you the stars of
stage, screen, and radio, in my
humble opinion, but chances
are you’re destined for Kansas
City today, not for a rendezvous
withCharlizeTheron. Bothwill
be on future covers, so if I’m
wrong and you are heading out
toL.A. andCharlize’shouse, I’m
still covered.
AndyouTampa locals:Idon’t
want you to think that the only
reasonwe’rekickingoffourdes-
tination covers with your city
is the Super Bowl. We started
with youbecause, quite frankly,
I love Tampa — especially the
food. I’ll take the Pepsi chal-
lengeandput theCevicheTapas
Bar and Restaurant on South
Howard Street up against any
tapas joint the world over. To
that end, there’s no better place
to chow down after a big game
than at Bern’s SteakHouse. For
my money, it doesn’t get any
better than a foodieweekend in
Tampa. Unless I’m listening to
the Jayhawks on theway down,
that is. FromTulsa.
Okay, for my money, it
doesn’t get any better than lis-
tening to theJayhawkswhileon
a plane fromTulsa toTampa in
order to watch the Super Bowl
onFebruary1, afterI’vefinished
watching
Office Space
at Charl-
ize Theron’s house. With Paula
Abdul. And Jimi Hendrix. Yep,
formymoney, it doesn’t get any
better than that.
Haveyoueverplayed thisgame:Pickany threebands that if
youhadyourway, youcouldsee inconcert inpresentday. It’s
theold reliable thatmybuddiesand I like toengage inwhen
we get together. And almost always, unlesswe stickparam-
eters on the game, someonewill say JimiHendrix, someone
elsewill say theDoors,andsomeoneelsewill say theGrateful
Dead. Iused tohear theEagles, but that reunionhappened.
