Lotsofmothers take trips tovisit theirgrownchildren.But
for most, the trek doesn’t involve a journey to Africa and
twoweeks of volunteerwork at amission inKenya. Cindy
McAlister, however, didmake that long trip, and it turned
out to be one of thegreat experiences of her life.McAlister, an assistant in theAmericanAirlinesPublish-
ing group, visited Africa last year to see firsthand the work being done by her two sons, Zane and Rance
Wilemon, who established amission inMaai Mahiu, Kenya, in 2002. The brothers’ nonprofit organization,
Comfort theChildren International (CTC,
), seeks to improve the lives of people in
thepoverty-strickenareabydoing things likebuildingschools, teaching trades, helpingwithnutritional and
medicalneeds, andsimplydemonstrating thatsomeonecaresabout them. “Yougiveyour love to thepeople,
and that’swhat theywant,” saysMcAlister. “Theywant tobehugged. Theywant tobeheard. Theywant you
to call thembyname. It just draws you.”
During her two weeks inMaai Mahiu, McAlister made home visits tomud huts to
spend timewith young people and the elderly, went grocery shopping for shut-ins, gavemanicures
and pedicures towomenwho have few luxuries in life, and even assisted a team in building a two-
room schoolhouse so that children would have to walk only minutes rather than hours to attend
school. “It was wonderful to see everything and be part of it,” she says. “Now I have a hunger to
help.”
McAlister’s sonshave futureplans tobuilda community center andpossibly low-incomehousing
in thearea.McAlister, for her part, wants to return. “Thepeople thereput a joy inmy life,” she says.
“I thought I had lotsof joy before, but thishasgivenmeabundant joy.”
