When American Airlines flight attendant Penny Mather went
towork on Thanksgiving Day 2008, shewas expecting a rou-
tine flight. Mather was busy preparing for departure from
Maui to Dallas/Fort Worth when she heard that a diabetic
passengerneededsomeorange juice. SaysMather: “Iwent tocheckon thepassengerandknew theorange juice
wouldn’t help. Hewas clearly indistress.”
Mather quickly took charge. “I declared a code red,” she relates. Theoxygen tankwas retrieved, and adoctor
and a nurse onboard assisted in administering the oxygen. Several members of the North Carolina Tar Heels
men’sbasketball team, whowerealsoonboard, jumpedup toassist inmoving thepassenger to thegalley.
“Hisbloodpressurewasoff thecharts,” saysMather. “Weworked tobringhimback toconsciousness.Wehad
thedefibrillator ready andmonitoredhisoxygenuntil theparamedicsarrived.”
Thepassengerwas transported toanearbyhospital (andhassincemadea full recovery).WhenMatherclosed theaircraftdoorandresumedprepa-
ration for departure, thepassengers clappedand cheered for her and theother crewmembers.
“I couldn’t havedone itwithout them,” shesays. “Oneveryflight,weworkasa team. Fromcalling
the cockpit, calling for paramedics, getting the emergency equipment— everything is coordinated.
It’sa true teameffort.”
Mather recently celebrated her 20-year anniversary as an AA flight attendant and says safety is
herfirstpriority. “Safety isfirstand foremost,but Ienjoyhelpingpassengersandcoworkerswithany-
thing theyneed. I lovemy job, and I lovehelpingothers.When someoneneedsme, I takeaction.”
