TheAmericanAirlines family ismadeupofmore than
just current employees. It also includes thousands of
retirees around theworld, many of whom, likeFoster
Parsell, areactive in theircommunities.Parsell, 85, is
avolunteeratAmerican’sFortWorth–basedC.R.SmithMuseum,whereheconducts tours twiceweekly
explaining the history of the company to visitors. It’s a subject he knowswell. Parsell joinedAmerican
in1943asagroundserviceman inWashington,D.C. Later, hebecameaflight engineer; hespent nearly
four decades in the cockpits of airplanes, working on everything from the piston-engine DC-6 to the
Boeing747. (Early inhiscareer, Parsellwason theflight deckwhenAmericanflewDwight Eisenhower
toa speakingengagement inDenison, Texas, thegeneral’sbirthplace).
In the late1940s,Parsell andhiswifemoved toHurst, Texas. There, in1961, heembarkedonapoliti-
cal career. “I felt astrongneed tobe involved in thecommunity,”hesays, noting that bothhis fatherand
grandfather had been involved in public service. He
servedasaHurst city councilman from1961 to1969andagain from1981 to1986.
Today, though no longer in the cockpit or on the council, Parsell says he’s never been busier.
Whether conductingmuseum tours, volunteering at FortWorth’sBass PerformanceHall, or teach-
ingprinciplesof flight toSunday-school children inHurst, Parsell stayson themove. “I’ma teacher,
and that’smy role,” he says. “Imust sharewhat I knowwith others. AmericanAirlines provided the
direction and path formy life, andmy father and grandfather provided the foundation onwhich I’ve
basedmy life. It’sbeenadesire to serve.” Say hello toFosterParsell if you’reever in theC.R. Smith
Museum. And look for active, service-orientedAA retirees likehim in your community.
