planet ismade frommoosemilk and sells for
$500 apound. In 1997, Christer andUlla Johans-
son opened their 59-acreÄlgensHus, which
means “moose house,” 400miles north of Stock-
holm as Europe’s onlymoose dairy farm. After the
Johansson family found three abandonedmoose
calves in the nearbywoods, theybeganmilking the
animals andproducing cheese that’s bothhigh in
protein and low in fat. ÄlgensHus currentlymakes
three varieties: aCamembert style, ablue cheese
similar to aGorgonzola, and a third that’smoist
and slightly sour, like feta cheese. All are for sale
at the farm and are also shipped toupscale hotels
and specialty shops across Sweden.Why the
exorbitant price?Because it takes up to twohours
tomilk onemoose—provided it even lets you.
