BruceSickler
When American Airlines employee Bruce Sickler, a longtime
advocate for the disabled at American and in communities in
theDallas/FortWortharea,was invited tobeoneoffive judges
at the “Ms.Wheelchair America” contest, it was, according to
him, theopportunity of a lifetime. “Itwasanexperience I’ll never forget,” saysSickler.
Sickler, whoprovides technical onlinesupport forAA.com, hasworkedat American formore thaneight years.
He also represents employeeswithdisabilities by servingonAmerican’sDiversity AdvisoryCouncil, whichover-
seesAmerican’s 16 diverseEmployeeResourceGroups, created to foster support and respect for the ethnically
and culturally diversebackgrounds andperspectives of employees. He says judging the competitionbrought his
jobat American into clearer focus.
“Most people don’t know that American has a specialized department that some airlines don’t offer,” says
Sickler. “In the first sevenmonths of this year, our Special Assistance Coordination desk handledmore than 40,000wheelchair requests. American
makes it a priority tomeet the challenge of accommodating travelerswith disabilities and handling
their specialmedical devices.”
Sickler, in addition to participating in the KomenRace for the Cure, also spearheads “Operation
Go-Go,”anew task forceat American that is focusedon improving the travel experience for custom-
erswithdisabilities.
“Although transporting customerswithmobility challenges and their devices is somethingwe do
every day, it’s somethingwe’re looking to improveevery day aswell,” saysSickler.
