Snowed in my house during Christmas break, I began cleaning my room in an attempt to escape the ever-persistent cabin fever.
THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE is recognised as one of the most influential books ever written. I invited Tony Lynch from Keep Thinking Big in England to speak to our team at The John Maxwell Company in Atlanta.
I have had the pleasure of attending a number of Tony’s events and have encouraged members of my team to attend as part of their on going development.
In addition to his events, Tony also offers practical training, workshops and offers his support to businesses on a one to one basis.
Connect & Grow is a monthly series of mentoring and training calls that I will lead each month. You must have JavaScript enabled in your browser to utilize the functionality of this website.
One of the most inspiring and impactful books ever written, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People has captivated readers for 25 years. The browser you are using is no longer supported and may not work correctly with this site. Rarely can a book deal with such basic concepts and yet be so powerful, practical and inspirational. First published in 1990, it has become a bestseller with more than 10 million copies sold, and the concepts in the book are still relevant 22 years later.
With a clean writing style that catches and keeps your attention, the book feels more like a one-on-one seminar. While reading, you begin to notice how well the author learns from his personal life and applies what he has learned to the business world. 7 Habits can help you tie together all the information that you have gathered from other self-help books or even from your own experience.
The first three habits are based on the concept that you must learn how to function independently.
Then, Covey moves on from independence to interdependence and discusses going outside your persona by involving other people. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will add value to my readers. Tony’s focus on leadership and how we can each make changes in our day to day approach that will make a real difference to our team and our business was very thought provoking. Covey, Sean's dad, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and cofounder and former vice chairman of Franklin Covey Co.
It has transformed the lives of Presidents and CEOs, educators and parents— in short, millions of people of all ages and occupations. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change written by Stephen R. The author discusses the principles of fairness, integrity, service, quality, honesty, growth and potential.
It is not just meant to be read, but also to be studied and taking notes while reading is a must. It hands you the tools to understand the lens through which you view the world and the ways in which to adjust them in order to be effective.

You begin to recognize the seven habits in the behavior of people you most admire and learn how to internalize them.  Amongst other things you will discover the answers to important questions about yourself that may reveal a new perspective for yourself and your life.
Covey presents a holistic, integrated, principle-centred approach for solving personal and professional problems. Through the power of questions and facilitating Tony lead us to a new level of understanding. All in attendance took something valuable away with them, whether they were experienced leaders or just starting out on their career path. This means he has a real understanding of the pressures an owner manager faces, the techniques that should be employed and how to drive your team and business to a more successful future! Covey, an experienced leader who was named one of the 25 most influential Americans, is a combination of fifty years of experience in management, the author’s personal knowledge and of the general wisdom of the last two millennia. It emphasizes a clear overall message and contains engaging visual representations that help you understand the more complicated concepts.
Rather than trying to achieve an instant transformation, the book focuses on helping you make a mental paradigm shift that will help you build a life structured on well-defined and strong principles. With penetrating insights and pointed anecdotes, Covey reveals a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, honesty and human dignity — principles that give us the security to adapt to change, and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates. Tony is an experienced international business coach and trainer, who has also been featured in Inc. It is a principle-based book for the modern man in the modern world.  It focuses on both professional and personal problems and, though it was primarily written for people in business, it can be read by anyone and should be read by everyone.
It is light and enjoyable as it is full of anecdotes and stories of the author’s own experiences and even memorable and revealing quotes. If you are looking to take your team and company to a new level, I recommend engaging with Tony Lynch.
While flipping through the pages, I began to think about the information contained in this book.
With his background and experience, he will provide training, insights and a strategy which will provide a structure and process in how to think big and further develop your company. The book teaches basic life skills such as self-esteem, getting along with others, resisting peer pressure and taking time for yourself.
It doesn’t matter how old a person gets, everyone is constantly building on these basic skills and a little reminder never hurts. Chances are, if you were ticked and you went into the office with that attitude, the staff wouldn’t be so sympathetic on your request to appeal it. Decide what your values are and set goals by thinking beyond today to decide what direction you want to take with your life so each step is in the right direction. He tried out all of his psycho experiments on us, and that’s why my brothers and sisters have major emotional problems (just kidding, siblings). But this is more than just time management with a planner, it’s about learning to overcome your fears and to be strong during your most hard moments. Putting first things first takes disciple, just look at the successful people you’ve met in your life.
It begins with the belief that we are all equal, that no one is inferior or superior to anyone else and no one really needs to be.
Have you ever talked with a friend about a problem you were facing only to find them texing the whole time you spoke?

Poor listening styles include spacing out, pretend listening, selective listening, word listening and self-centered listening. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent.)Habit #6: SynergizeHave you ever watched a flock of geese heading south flying in a V formation? Scientists have learned some amazing things about why they fly that way: By flying in formation, the whole flock can fly 71 percent farther than if each bird flew alone.
As the lead goose gets tired, he will rotate to the back of the V and allow another goose to take the lead.
When one the geese gets sick or is wounded and falls out of formation, two geese will follow it down to help and protect it.
They will stay with the injured goose until it is better or dies and then will join a new formation or create their own to catch up with the group.
Habit #6: Synergize, is achieved when two or more people work together to create a better solution that either could alone. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of your life: body, brain, heart and soul.
We call it the “public victory.” You’ve got to get your personal act together before you can be a good team player.
Habit 3: Put First Things Last Whatever is most important in your life, don’t do it until you have spent sufficient time watching videos of cute animals on YouTube, texting endlessly, and lounging around.
If you want to be at the top of the popularity list, you’d better knock someone else off first.
If it looks like you’re going to lose, however, make sure you drag that sucker down with you. Once everyone understands your views, pretend to listen to theirs by nodding and saying “uh-huh” while daydreaming about what’s for lunch. Habit 6: Don’t Cooperate Let’s face it, other people are weird because they’re different from you. Habit 7: Wear Yourself Out Be so busy with life that you never take time to renew or improve yourself. And, for heaven’s sake, stay away from good books, nature, or anything else that may inspire you. Try doing the “baby steps” at the end of each chapter, which were designed to help you start living the habits immediately. You may also want to check out the hotlines and websites listed at the back of the book for additional help or information. If you’re the kind of reader who likes to skip around looking for cartoons and tidbits, that’s fine. But at some point you ought to read the book from start to finish, because the 7 Habits are sequential.
