Gone are the days of just drilling a child with flashcards and having them memorize letters.
I thought it would be fun to share with you an easy & handy list for tactile ABC ideas that you could use with your tots and preschoolers to give letter recognition a more hands-on and sensory experience. Here on Mom to 2 Posh Lil Divas you will find mom talk, family fun, learning ideas & resources, creative crafts, playtime fun, product reviews and giveaways and plenty of Lil Diva antics!Being a mom is its own unique kind of adventure!

August 5, 2010 by Quirky Momma Pin816 Share112 Tweet EmailMy preschoolers love crackers and all things snack related.  I was thrilled to have discovered Sara and her nifty blog, Splendidly Imperfect.  She has graciously agreed to guest post her alphabet cheese crackers for us!  Thanks Sara!  Go check out her blog today and leave a comment there if you like these yummy preservative-free healthy snacks! I used a pastry blender to start to bring everything together.   Once it started to clean the sides of the bowl, I switched to my hand and made sure it was mixed well. Confession time – I usually only have enough patience to do one pan worth of alphabet crackers before I find myself wanting to say bad words. Do you think these look good?  You should check out Sara’s Felt Food!  They look yummy and like a lot of pretend fun!  If you liked this alphabet crackers recipe, be sure to stop by her blog and tell her! Frequent rereading of these books will sharpen the quick visual recognition of letters for your child.

ABC puzzles - I have made these with foam pieces and using block style letter templates that I colored, laminated and cut into puzzle peices. Alphabet lacing cards - you can easily make these using a laminated block letter template, a hole puncher & some shoe laces or string! Be sure to let me know if you use any of these ideas - I'd love to hear how it went for you.
I didn’t want to have them constantly eating sweets, which are my forte, so it was time to branch out into salty snacks. It’s best to grate the cheese yourself because the pre-grated stuff they sell at the grocery store is coated in cornstarch and that will throw off the consistency of your final product.
If you want to be like me, you can forget about it completely (whoops!) and leave it overnight too, it’s okay. Be sure to leave a little bit of room between them because they will puff slightly while baking.
He couldn’t wait to get his hands on them!  He likes to hold them up and tell me what the letter is before eating it. I really have to engage him in ways that make him feel like he’s playing, not learning.
Plus, of course there are the actual wooden puzzles kids love playing with that you can purchase.

I also like to grate my own Parmesan because it’s better quality and tastes better than the pre-grated kind. Bake at 325 degrees F for eleven minutes and then allow to cool completely on the pan before removing. This project will probably take us a few weeks to complete.Neither do you have to complete the book in ABC order. It’s so smart when they can think up their own picture that has that beginning letter sound so I would go with that. Use a clip art program or the internet to track down and print out that picture or just draw a sketch yourself.
It will be worth the extra effort to make the book personalized to your child! We had a few extra pages at the end of our book so I skipped a few pages, flipped the book, and created a spot to record some known sight words! The Seuss characters that are plain fun to look at make this anything but a boring alphabet book.
